Unemployed Workers & Allies to Senator John McCain:
We Need Action on Unemployment Insurance, Jobs

(Phoenix, AZ) – Today, unemployed Arizonans will deliver a message to Senator John McCain: pass a jobs bill NOW. Delegations to the Senator’s Phoenix and Tucson offices will ask that he bring the Republican filibuster of the jobs bill to an end, which persists even as Arizona continues to face an unemployment rate above 9%. Unemployment benefits began expiring at the beginning of June, and another 1.2 million Americans will lose their benefits after today.

“The failure to pass a jobs bill would leave tens of thousands of unemployed Arizonans without the means to support their families, punch a $400 million hole in the Arizona state budget, and ultimately lead to fewer teachers in Arizona classrooms, fewer police on our streets, and elderly patients forced out of nursing homes,” said Rebekah Friend, Executive Director of the Arizona AFL-CIO.

Workers will deliver letters to McCain’s offices and speak about the challenges of being unemployed amidst continued threats by Republican congresspersons to end unemployment insurance.

WHAT:     Rally and press conference calling on Senator McCain to pass a jobs bill to prevent layoffs and provide aid to the unemployed.

WHEN:     4:30 to 5:30 PM

WHERE:     (Two locations)
