URGENT ACTION ALERT: 86,000 PETITION SIGNATURES NEEDED BY LABOR DAY
We need your help to stand up to the politicians and extremists; the same people who brought us the disastrous SB 1070. Now they are striking at the very heart of our democracy: manipulating the system to make it more difficult to vote.
Republicans control the Arizona House, Senate and Governor's office and they will do anything and everything they can to preserve their power; Kick people off the early voter rolls; Keep third parties off the ballot, and make it a crime to help elderly, homebound, disabled and economically disadvantaged voters get their early voting ballots to the polls and counted.
Here's how it happened: In the final hours of the 2013 legislative session, two Republicans joined a united and unanimous Democratic House caucus to vote against the passage of HB 2305. This "elections omnibus bill" had been cobbled together from several other destructive election related bills that had failed. But in spite of fierce opposition, Republicans pushed HB 2305 through the House (33-26-1) and then Senate, (16-13-1). And then, even though she privately expressed concern about the bill's overreaching provisions, Governor Jan Brewer signed HB 2305 into law on June 14, 2013.
Fortunately, that is NOT the end of this story. The Arizona Constitution provides us with a CITIZEN'S VETO! If we can collect just 86,000 petition signatures from registered voters who are fed up with the antics of our self serving elected officials and who want to protect themselves, we can stop HB 2305 dead in it's tracks so it won't take effect. That will give us the opportunity to permanently block HB 2305 by voting "No" in the November 2014 elections.
The Arizona AFL-CIO has petitions in both the Phoenix and Tucson offices. You can help by gathering at least 15 signatures from friends and family or any Arizona voters. Call us and we will be glad to get petitions to you. But time is short. We must turn in these signatures by early September, just after Labor Day.
